What Are Moles?
Moles, also known as melanocytic naevi or beauty marks, are common skin growths that can appear anywhere on the body. They develop when pigment-producing cells called melanocytes grow together in clusters. Most moles are completely harmless, however some can change over time. In rare cases, certain types of moles may develop into melanoma, a form of skin cancer.
This is why it is important to monitor any:
- New moles
- Changes in shape, size or colour
- Itching, bleeding or irritation
- Unusual or irregular-looking lesions
Types Of Moles
Common Nevi (Benign Moles)
These are very common skin growths found on most people. They are usually:
- Pink, tan or brown in colour
- Smooth with clear edges
- Smaller than 5mm wide
- Harmless
Dysplastic Nevi (Atypical Moles)
These moles can appear:
- Larger than common moles
- Uneven in shape
- With less regular borders
- With mixed colours throughout
Having dysplastic nevi may increase the risk of developing melanoma, particularly if multiple atypical moles are present.
